Liberty High Volunteer Day
What an incredible day we had on June 23rd! Liberty High rising senior Emerson Bennett hosted a Volunteer Day at Houses into Homes, using the grant he received from America’s Promise Youth Challenge. He recruited 32 Liberty students to spend the day with us and WOW did we get a lot done! Our volunteers were able to do a few deliveries, complete 11 furniture pick ups, drop off recycling, paint some furniture, clean the bathrooms, and do a ton of warehouse organizing! Every task is part of the process of providing our friends and neighbors a comfortable place to sit, sleep, and eat.
One of our goals is to divert as much as possible away from the landfill. Sometimes, however, with our focus on serving people quickly and efficiently, we find that some items but are not practical for us to store and deliver. When that happens, we work to find a good place for them. Yesterday, some of our wonderful student volunteers took boxes of fabric and a sewing machine to Open Heartland, where they have a sewing program. We are also pleased to donate to A to Z Thrift store. They sell some of the items, and some of the proceeds benefit our local Sudanese community. They also ship useful items to Sudan, where the donations are very much appreciated.
We just want to give give a huge thank you to Emerson and his mom Jana, and to all the Liberty students who gave their time and energy on Wednesday to make this community a better place.
